Hey Dirk,
The ability to post a status to a course is originally from Batucada. I
would like to see this functionality move to resemble more of a threaded
discussion. The new threaded discussion work will most likely be part of
the cohort/group feature that's coming up shortly so I'd say that it
doesn't make sense to spend a lot of time improving the threaded-ness of
status updates.
I'm not opposed to dropping things that aren't being used.
