We were thinking of having a self-assessed badge at the end of each
challenge that you get for completing the challenge, i.e. by submitting a
link to the activity wall. Or it is something you get by checking of the
tasks from the task list.
For example after completing the Introduce Yourself Challenge you get
the : Introduce
Yourself Badge for completing the challenge
Re: badge cake: I like that idea, it could be a badge that groups together
the first five challenges for example.

RE: adopt this challenge could be something that "unlocks" after you get a
certain combination of badges. (just an idea)
In the notifications it could also be a matter of changing the language to
something that conveys for example that after getting the HTML Basic Badge
you have unlocked this awesome power to adopt challenges. We could tie that
to a role as well.

It could be nice to have a queue as an adopter of challenges or registered
helper, with all the challenges that need to be reviewed...based on how many
challenges you review and how well you do you would be able to earn some
badges that would recognize you as a valid mentor.
