800 px width might work better for desktops. experiment.

Also under the advanced tab of the image properties you can select a css
class. So I suppose if needed someone could craft a custom css file, upload
it and make it know to users with particular needs.

The long term solution might be to offer different rich text editors that
support markdown, zen coding - heck go crazy and get one of those fancy
pants <iframe> enabled editors.
