Basically, Mailman (the software running the mailing list) attaches that
to the messages so that the information about the mailing list (what the
email address is and where to get more information/unsubscribe) is with
every message. It does this instead of messing with the original message.
Most email clients display that .txt file underneath the message, see
the attached screenshot of your message shown in Thunderbird.
You're not doing anything wrong.
Question, is the footer showing up in your view of the message, whether
or not you click on the attachment link? If not, your mail client is not
behaving like most others in existence. Indeed, it is behaving
incorrectly. Mailman indicates that the .txt attachment should be
displayed inline by having this in its header: "Content-Disposition:
inline" (see: http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2183.txt)
Best,
Greg
