[p2pu-dev] Idea: Intelligent study group momentum machine

Might be a good idea to stay away from language like “scripting your course” it’s very disconnected and anti-social… perhaps this really cool idea would be better wrapped into a scheduling mechanism with organizers creating custom “alerts” to go along with their syllabuses

This would be pretty cool! There is a huge literature in the computer-supported collaborative learning literature (my academic field) on "scripting" - basically automated little prompts or interventions that can help move a group collaboration forwards. I think a stand-up script, or a "pre-packaged" course that has some automatic prompts built into it - once you start "running it", every week it will prompt people to do something etc, is a pretty cool idea! We hadn't planned to discuss scripting in the CSCL course, but maybe we'll include it. (And there will be more courses that are more specific, the literature is huge, and very relevant to everything P2PU is doing!)

on the momentum front i also imagine something like the automated bi-weekly standup script could be applied (conceptually) to groups that wanted to use it. ie, check a box [ ] i would like a script to run my course. :)

eg. for, say, a reading group-- you could have it set up to email everyone every two weeks saying, "so? how was the next chapter?".

So, linking user tags with study group tags?

Neat :-)

Wasn't there an idea of adding "interest" or "areas of expertise" to our profiles? So, not only could you say "20 study groups have been proposed. Can you help any of them become a reality?" but also "20 study groups have been proposed. 10 of them are about HTML and you <3 HTML. Share the <3 with others that feel the same way by creating the group." And then that "it's easy, here's how" stuff.

@Stian Just bouncing off your original idea :-) I think this may also help traditional courses, but will allow those organisers to gauge interest and engage with participants from an earlier stage of development.

@Jessica yeah, it should encourage social cohesion from the beginning. Often I think that what prevents people from participating is not being sure if their learning idea is popular enough, or not knowing enough as an individual to get started.
I like the idea of "proposed" as a status

20 study groups have been proposed. Can you help any of them become a reality?

I think this is a great idea. I still think there is a place for more traditionally organized courses, but I think this would be a great compliment. It could be setting up a study group around a course that has already run, around a Saylor or MIT Scholar (both have fairly complete resources that are all open) course, around a book that is openly available etc.

Awesome idea. Reminds me of meetup too where you can sign up for interests and if a new group forms, you're told about it. But to say that you'll create the group if there are others interested is also great.

So, maybe this is a new status? "proposed" vs "draft"? Still using the study group model but adding a little extra something something to it?

I really like this :)

+1 Stian's idea about an intelligent way for study group momentum to be built into the platform. It should be like UserVoice Course Suggestions, but built into Lernanta. (it's a module which could also be useful for Batacuda and drumbeat too). Uservoice obviously gathers interest but its hard to take that interest automatically into p2pu.

How about something like this

Maria Von Trapp wants to learn: Yodelling 101, but is unsure about whether people want to learn with her. (It's yodelling, so she may have a point)

"if 5 other people promise to join my study group for Yodelling 101 I'll commit to creating it, finding the first resources and setting up a basic task. I'd love some co-admins to help me out!"

Follow: I want to hear about this study group when it is established.
Participate: I want to learn Yodelling 101 too!
Participate and Help Establish: I want to help develop this Yodelling 101 study group! If 5 other people promise to sign up for this study group I commit to helping Maria Von Trapp establish it.

Time passes...

5 people want to participate, 2 of them (Sally and Peter) wanted to help out

Maria Von Trapp, Sally and Peter are emailed:

Hi Maria Von Trapp, it's P2PU here. 21 days ago you commited to setting up a study group for Yodelling 101 if 5 other people promised to participate. You're in luck!

Not only did 5 people sign-up, two other users wanted to help you establish the Study Group. Say hi to Sally and Peter now.

We've created the Yodelling 101 study group for you. Getting a study group setup is as easy as Do, Re, Mi! You can find help here and can message your co-admins here.

We're looking forward to hearing about your progress!
