This is something I've also noticed.

There are several things contributing to the problems. One of them is how
followers for courses are set up - it seems like the generated SQL queries
hits the db quite hard. Another problem is lots of data lying around in the
db that makes things slower as the size of the tables increases.

I'll be looking into this carefully.
